All dogs work in packs mentality, there is an alpha and there is a beta. You may call it the pecking order as well. Owners are the Alpha.  The dog being either a pet or working dog fit the beta category. Owners take care of the dog and in return the dog learns to please the owner. To get this done there must be some level of obedience. After obedience a dog can learn to perform task that are taught through attrition and use of pressure.
